Harvest Season 2022

As the 2022 harvest season rolls near, vineyard owners and wine producers are getting ready here in the Verde Valley and across Arizona

Many guests on our Sedona wine tours ask “When in harvest season for Arizona?” This depends on many factors, but it’s generally in August and September. There is a lot of prep work that goes into ensuring the grapes will be ripe and safe leading up to their actual harvest time. You may have seen nets over the vines during a visit to a vineyard and wondered what that was all about. Simply put, its to protect the grapes from being picked at by birds and many other wildlife. We don’t want them eating the fruit before we can get to it and turn into wine!

But even before nets go up, there is a lot of tedious work that goes into making sure those grape clusters will survive the elements. Suckering, hedging, leaf tucking and pulling, fruit dropping, spraying and so much more is involved in the weeks leading up to harvest. It’s far too broad a subject to dive into here, but worthwhile investigating on your own if you’re intrigued.

I’ve been helping out in the vineyards at D.A. Ranch this season, which has been a wonderful experience. Vineyard Manager Elliot Stephens, has quite the wealth of knowledge about the entire process, especially as it pertains to the 7 acres under vine on this beautiful property.
